Connected Health Cities
A Project creating new collaborations between composers and health data project across the North of England.
About the Project
In 2019 Zakiya Leeming created a project with Connected Health Cities (CHC) establishing collaborations between health data researchers and composers. Leeming partnered with the team at the CHC Hub and wrote a piece after their innovative central role, and selected four composers to work with project teams from each of the four regions in the North of England involved in the project. From early intervention strategies, to new stroke tools for paramedics, to public involvement and engagement senates and ambulatory care experiences, each piece reflected the innovative work being carried out by health data teams across the North of England.

The composers and health data project teams presented their their collaborations and the new musical works were premiered by Festivo Winds at a public evening event at the Manchester Museum.

Hub
Zakiya Leeming & CHC Hub
‘Hub’ presents four discrete musical passages that are increasingly influenced by one another. This process was informed by the CHC method of knowledge exchange across the projects and regions of the North of England.

The piece starts with the presentation of four different musical sections, each defined by a contrasting set of musical parameters (pitch, rhythm, tempo, dynamics and articulations). This represented the idea of four different regions, each with their own approaches. During the second movement, the four sections each share their properties with one of the other sections - representing knowledge exchange. This process of cross-influence happens a second time, with all four sections of music then influenced by one another. One final movement presents a final version of the cross-influence from each section, whilst each section retains its core musical identity. This represents projects sharing finds and outcomes about the process.
